Fibre Channel Over Token Ring!!!

Nimble Storage and Compellent have both announced at Tech Field Day Seattle 2010 that the next protocol that they will be supporting is none other that FCTR.

Finally, we can bring the civility of the Token Ring world to the wild, wild, west of storage. Imagine the performance benefits of forcing each disk in your storage array to wait for the token before they're allowed to transfer data.

What do YOU think? How long will it be before we see the following products:

EMC SLOW (It's the version of FAST that supports Token Ring)
NetApp SMTR (SnapManager for Token Ring)
HDS UPS (It is to USP what UPS is to FedEX)
3PAR HeyNow! (3Par requires each disk to say "Hey Now!" if they want the token)
Compellent Frozen Data (It's the Fluid Data line slowed down so much it freezes)
IBM WHU (The Prequel to XIV)
HP StorageDoesntWork (Just saying)

  2. You know, you find yourself wondering about the origins of storage and why people actually starting storing data on devices. You then start to understand why they needed a ring in order to be able to pass the token, blah, blah, blah. There's no punch line here.

  3. When HP has FCoTR products, we at least wouldn't position them as solving world hunger. And we might not be the first with FCoTR, but we'd not deviate from the standard and then ensue with some magic handwaving to explain why we deviated.

    When we have our first FCoTR product, it will do what we say it does. And it will work. Now having said all that, we're investigating another technology that is currently NDA. It will be far cheaper than FCoTR. All I can say is that it's called FCoSN. Stay tuned....

    Oops, and I guess I have to disclose that I work for HP, StorageWorks - Curtis, I take no offense to our FCoTR products that don't work ;^)
